Creamy Crabtastic Pasta

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010
Frozen white crab meat and pasta.

This was the first time I’ve tried real crab before, or at least, in recent memory. It tastes, oddly enough, of Crab Sticks, but the texture is slightly hairy. The dark meat has more flavour and more of a pate type texture. I wasn’t in love with it, texture wise, but the taste was right up there. I was expecting almost a prawn/lobster type taste, and although it wasn’t too far off, it wasn’t the same.
If you know someone who likes a bit of crab, this is a nice one to show off a crab’s crabbiness.

All the bits

I kind of made this one up based on various things I’ve seen on the telly, it took me three tries to perfect it, the first time was lush, the second time was a right mess (I got distracted by the internet and hollyoaks and the soup turned into a sauce) and the third time was fantastic. It’s a nice creamy soup, without being thick, packed with flavour and takes no longer than 15 minutes from opening up the packets of ingredients to taking your first bite. You can make it spicy-hotter by chopping up more of the chilli and adding that, or sprinkling more at the end, or you could make it weaker by leaving that bit out. What I made was just right for me. This is the first time I’ve used fresh herbs or limes before in cooking, and it really does add something to it.

Roast Beef (I think)

I really like Roast Beef. I grow up not having it, I don't think my mum ever cooked it for me, but when I go to the likes of a sandwich shop, a roast beef and horseradish sandwich is one of my favorites. My mum did make Salt Beef, which I'll try to make myself ...

Finished

I’ll admit to it, I hate cooking with rice. I can never get it quite how I like it, it’s eaither over or under done. I’ve not gotten around to buying a metal strainer eaither. I like eating it, just hate cooking it. I was sitting at the doctors, going through the “20 minute meal” Jamie Oliver app, and he showed me how it’s done. It looked a bit of a palarava, but I was determind to try it, and it turned out good (the second one, the first one I wasn’t keen on.)

Something a day

It’s a new year, and a new decade. There are a lot of ‘Photo a day’ things. My plan is to dedicate a bit of time (maybe 10 minutes, maybe a few hours, we’ll see) a day, every day, for the next year, into doing something creative. Weather that’s cooking something new and interesting, designing some wallpapers or web apps, developing a new section to a website…. It doesn’t really matter, as long as it’s something. It’ll help keep the mind sharp, and hopefully I’ll come up with something useful to someone.

Sweet Chilli Jam (or sauce if it doesn’t settle)

A lovely christmas prezzy.

Have I come up trumps, or have I come up trumps. Oh boy, this is a great recipe. There was a bit of flaffing about, cutting up all the vegetables (and braving ASDA a few days before Christmas), but I think this one is worth it, and it makes so much that if you give 3/4 of it away as a gift, you’ll still have enough to last you a good while. There is a Sweet Chili sauce I buy from the local butchers, “So!Go sweet chili”, it’s about ÂŁ4 a bottle, and although it lasts a little 200ml bottle. It’s great stuff, but if I was charging that for this stuff, I’d be a millionaire after the 5th batch, and let me tell you, it’s a damn sight better.

Doesn

Pad Gonz, it's like Pad Thai, only not quite. The whole thing was easy to make, took less than 10 minutes, most of the stuff I already had in the fridge. I'll be honest with you, I forgot a few bits as I was cooking it, I was going to incorporate Peanut Butter to give ...

Chicken Scratchings ! (Now I know why you can’t get these in the shops)

CHICKEN SCRATCHINGS !

It was cheaper for me to buy chicken fillets with the skin on, than to have them with the skin off. I didn't need them in what I was cooking, and didn't what to just chuck them away. When having a roast chicken, the best bit is the crispy skin... so can I do this ...

Good stuff

This one is in honour of how much I hate ASDA. I had all the bits I needed for a lovely meal, but ended up getting so wound up in ASDA that I left and went to my tescos-local and got most of the stuff anyway. It’s good stuff, a nice tomato’y sausage’y Spanish stew thing.

Bing bang bosh, done.

There isn’t much in this world that makes me close my eyes in pure unadulterated pleasure, savoring every mouth-full, but this is one of those things. Should I have a “Death row meal”, it won’t be foie gras and lobster from Claridges that I would be asking for, it would be this. In my mind, I’ve always related this meal (or even just egg’n'chips) with something special, only having it 3 or 4 times a year. They’re so much better than ‘chippy’ chips, and don’t get me wrong, they have their place in the world, but then again, so does McDonalds.
